Inside Look at the Tose Family Tennis Center and Fluegel Moore Tennis Stadium

The U.S. Naval Academy prides itself on its mission to prepare midshipmen physically to become U.S. Navy and Marine Corps officers. To that end, a number of state-of-the-art sports facilities have recently joined the stunning architecture of the Yard, each with their own unique purpose and passion. The Ron Terwilliger Center for Student Athletes is an impressive homage to the history of Navy’s physical mission as well as a celebration of the excellence of Navy sports today and their preparation for tomorrow. It is 25,000 square feet of Navy pride that was built in 2021. Prior to Terwilliger  in 2007, the Hooper Brigade Sports Complex was added, with 150,000 square feet of space for Navy athletes and authorized patrons. Here is their story.

    What’s Inside

The Hooper Brigade Sports Complex sits next to the Naval Academy Golf Course, across the Severn River from the Naval Academy. With its expansive footprint, the ice hockey, rugby and tennis facilities are home to a variety of Navy teams that practice and play there.

Named for early Navy aviator Thornton D. and his wife Elizabeth S. Hooper by their son and leadership donor, Class of 1951 graduate Ralph W. Hooper, this complex was privately funded with $18.5 million in donations. It boasts an Olympic-size hockey rink, six outdoor tennis courts, six indoor tennis courts, a golf pro shop, video-equipped golf instruction stations, a 40 foot by 60 foot putting green, a fitness center, a mix of locker rooms, athletic training rooms, office space for coaches, and more. It’s the home for varsity Navy Men’s Tennis and Navy Women’s Tennis.

The tennis center portion was dedicated in 2007, and named for Maurice and Terri Tosé (Class of 1978), for their financial contributions. It includes the six indoor hard courts that cover about 49,000 square feet and the six outdoor lighted hard tennis courts. The Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium also encompasses those six outdoor tennis courts. This portion was named for leadership gifts from Rick (Class of 1961), and Donna Fluegel and Bill (Class of 1961), and Sandra Moore. The Adkins Indoor Tennis Court, one of the indoor courts, honors Captain James N. (Class of 1958) and Rosemary Adkins for their leadership gift.
