Late November was an exciting and pivotal time for U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen, especially for the Firsties eagerly awaiting their USNA service assignments. For the Class of 2025, this milestone marks the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and dedication. With their future paths officially set, these soon-to-be officers are one step closer to commissioning and joining the ranks of military leaders in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Let’s take a closer look at where the Class of 2025 is heading and what their assignments mean for their careers and the nation.

The Significance of Career Assignments

Career assignments are more than just job designations; they reflect each midshipman’s unique skills, interests, and aspirations. From piloting aircraft to commanding submarines, these roles will define their early careers and set the tone for their contributions to the Fleet, the Marine Corps, and the security of the United States.

The assignment process involves a blend of performance and the needs of the Navy and Marine Corps, as well as individual preference. While midshipmen submit their choices, their academic, physical, and leadership records play a major role in determining their final assignments.

Breaking Down the USNA Service Assignments

And now for the drumroll! A complete list of the number of midshipmen assigned to each role shows the various USNA service assignments by community. The Class of 2025 has 787 total Navy assignments and 262 total Marine Corps assignments for a total of 1,049 for the class. Here’s where they’re heading, come this spring:

Naval Aviation: 286 Midshipmen

Naval Aviation is the most popular assignment, as it continues to draw midshipmen who dream of taking to the skies. Those assigned as pilots and Naval Flight Officers (NFOs) will begin their training on the path to mastering some of the world’s most advanced aircraft. Whether they’re flying fighter jets or piloting helicopters, their roles are critical to both combat and logistical missions. Fun fact: Tom Cruise, known for playing a Naval Flight Officer in the US Navy in Top Gun, was recently honored with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award for boosting military interest!

U.S. Marine Corps: 262 Midshipmen

As is tradition, a number of midshipmen have chosen to serve with the Marine Corps. From ground combat roles to aviation, these future Marine officers will embody the Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment as they lead Marines in a variety of operations.

Surface Warfare (SWO): 240 Midshipmen

As always, Surface Warfare is one of the most popular assignments, with a significant percentage of the class choosing to serve on surface ships. These future Surface Warfare Officers will learn the ropes of ship operations, navigation, and leadership at sea. While serving on U.S. Navy ships that include everything from destroyers to aircraft carriers, SWOs form the backbone of the Fleet, ensuring that the Navy remains a formidable global presence. Submarine Force: 165 Midshipmen

A select group of midshipmen will report to the Silent Service, taking on the demanding yet rewarding role of submariners. These officers will oversee the operation of nuclear-powered submarines, conducting covert missions and ensuring America’s strategic deterrence. Submariners often thrive in challenging environments, combining technical expertise with mental toughness.

Special Warfare and Special Operations: 48 Midshipmen

A small but elite portion of the class has been assigned to Special Warfare (SEALs) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). These roles demand exceptional physical and mental endurance, as these officers will undergo some of the most rigorous training the military has to offer.

Cyber Warfare and Information Warfare: 22 Midshipmen

Reflecting the Navy’s increasing emphasis on cyber and information security, several midshipmen have been assigned to these cutting-edge fields. These officers will play a key role in protecting critical information and ensuring the Navy’s technological superiority.
