There is something purely magical about fall on the Yard. The crisp air, crunching leaves, and golden light on the Severn River make the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) a stunning place to explore during this time of year. Whether you're a seasoned Navy fan or a first-time visitor, our fall scavenger hunt offers the perfect excuse to take a stroll and uncover both the iconic and lesser-known spots of this historic campus.
No USNA adventure is complete without a stop at the Herndon Monument. This 21-foot granite obelisk is more than a striking sculpture, it’s also the site of one of the most beloved traditions at the Academy. Each spring, the plebes (first-year students) scramble to the top of the greased monument to replace a plebe cap with an upperclassman’s cover, officially marking the end of their rigorous plebe year. In the fall, the Herndon Monument stands quietly, offering a symbolic photo op and a chance to reflect on perseverance and teamwork.
Find the Treasure: See if you can find the last name of the famous naval leader who went down with his ship and the date of the sinking, both enshrined simply in the monument’s plaque. For more on the fascinating history of this beloved USNA icon, see our blog post “This is Monumental: Herndon Monument.”
Dahlgren Hall may look like a stately old building (and it is), but it’s also full of surprises. Originally used as an armory and drill hall, this space has served many functions throughout the years, even hosting a basketball court and ice rink for a time. Now, it’s been transformed into a lively venue for events, ceremonies, and casual hangouts (and it has also reclaimed its place as home to the beloved Ring Dance). The interior is a blend of history and community - a great place to grab a sandwich at the Drydock Restaurant or admire the architecture.
Find the Treasure: Bonus scavenger hunt points if you can find the 1877 model of the USS Antietam on display inside.

Take a short walk towards the river and you'll reach one of the Yard’s most scenic and often-overlooked gems: the Robert Crown Sailing Center. This spot is itself a treasure of modern architecture, and while the public cannot enter, simply standing outside offers stunning views of the Severn River and the Academy’s impressive fleet of sailboats. Midshipmen are required to take sailing classes (yes, even in cold weather)!
Find the Treasure: Grab some photos of the sailboats bobbing gently in the water (and maybe even catch a practice session underway).

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, the Nimitz Library is the intellectual heart of the Academy. While not open to the public, even standing outside allows one to take in its awe-inspiring architecture and continue their exploration of the Naval Academy.
Find the Treasure: Not far from Nimitz Library and across from Mahan Hall, you’ll find the striking Macedonian Monument, bearing the figurehead from its namesake ship, the HMS Macedonian. See if you can figure out what makes it so special (hint: check the materials).

One of the most iconic structures on the Yard, the Naval Academy Chapel is breathtaking both inside and out. Its massive dome dominates the skyline, and the interior, with its stained glass and ornate architecture, inspires awe. Below the Chapel lies the crypt of John Paul Jones, one of the earliest U.S. naval heroes and an icon at the Naval Academy. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Annapolis, don’t skip this. It’s a history lesson, a photo op, and a spiritual experience all in one.
Find the Treasure: The stained glass windows were made by the famous Tiffany Studios glass maker, and the most recognized stained glass window is the “Commission Invisible,” which depicts a newly graduated Ensign reading his commission in the shadow of the nation's flag. See if you can locate this window!

These guided experiences are a fantastic way to soak in the history, architecture, and traditions that make the USNA such a special place. The guides are often retired military officers or others in the know with fascinating stories and insider knowledge to share.
Find the Treasure: On the tour, see if you can find the N* flags, not far from a bronze statue of our famous mascot!
