Noon Meal Formation
Some of the Academy's most memorable traditions happen every day.
Watching the Brigade assemble for Noon Meal Formation is a powerful reminder that discipline, precision, and teamwork aren't reserved for special occasions. Hundreds of midshipmen awaiting the calls of their leaders and then moving in perfect step in T-Court creates an unforgettable sight for visitors and an everyday rhythm of Academy life for the Brigade.

Army-Navy: More Than a Football Game
Every college has rivalries. Only two have the Army-Navy rivalry.
The annual Navy vs. Army football game is one of the most celebrated traditions in all of sports. For one unforgettable day each December (this year it’s Saturday, December 12th at MetLife Stadium), the nation pauses to watch two teams whose players will someday serve alongside one another.
The pageantry is extraordinary, with the March-On of the Brigade and Corps of Cadets. The flyovers raise the excitement to a fever pitch. There’s the singing of both alma maters, and the enduring pride. Navy vs. Army is the ultimate match-up.
Whether Navy wins or loses, the game serves as a reminder that respect, honor, and service ultimately matter more than the final score. It's one of the defining traditions among America's military academies, and one every Mid remembers forever.

Sea Trials
Towards the end of Plebe Year comes one of the most physically and mentally demanding experiences of the year for these freshmen: Sea Trials.
This intensive capstone event challenges plebes through obstacle courses, endurance events, team competitions, and leadership exercises that test everything they've learned throughout the year, for a journey lasting about fourteen hours.
By the time Sea Trials concludes, many plebes discover something important: They're capable of far more than they ever imagined when they work together. It's one of those bonding experiences that becomes legendary in every graduating class.

The Herndon Climb
If there's one event that perfectly symbolizes teamwork, it's the Herndon Climb.
At the very end of Plebe Year, the towering Herndon Monument is coated with grease before hundreds of plebes work together to ascend the 21-foot obelisk and replace the traditional "Dixie cup" hat with an upper-class cover.
No one reaches the top alone.
The event is messy, exhausting, and exhilarating, but that's exactly the point. Success comes from trust, communication, determination, and helping one another, all qualities that define life in the Fleet just as much as life at the Academy.
When the cover is finally raised, the cheers echo across the Yard, celebrating not just one person but an entire class moving forward together, Plebes No More!

Ring Dance
One of the Academy's most elegant traditions takes place in May as the academic year winds down. At the USNA Ring Dance, second class midshipmen receive their long-awaited class rings and celebrate alongside family and friends. It’s one of the most anticipated formal events of their Academy experience.
During this special evening, midshipmen dip their class rings into water from the Seven Seas, a symbolic gesture representing future service around the globe. Each naval class has a committee that designs its own class crest. Along with the coat-of-arms, this design is integrated into that year’s ring. Commissioning Week and Graduation
Quicker than expected, graduation arrives. Few occasions match the emotion of Commissioning Week.
Families gather from across the country. Friends reunite. The Blue Angels soar overhead during graduation week celebrations. Everyone looks forward to the Navy graduation at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, when years of sacrifice culminate in diplomas, commissions, the graduation hat toss, challenge coin exchanges, silver dollar salutes, and the opportunity to serve as officers in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. It's a day filled with pride, gratitude, and excitement, not only for the graduates themselves, but for everyone who helped them reach this milestone.
A Journey Like No Other
These milestones are only a handful of the traditions that make the Naval Academy so distinctive.
