Class Portrait: Class of 2028 Stats, Insights, and Tips for Future Applicants

Ahoy, future midshipmen and proud parents! The U.S. Naval Academy’s Class of 2028 is making waves, and we’ve got the inside scoop on what it takes to join this elite group. With 1,187 bright minds and sharp uniforms ready to set sail on their naval journey, the Class of 2028 is as impressive as it is diverse. Whether you’re a high school student eyeing the Yard or a parent guiding your child through the Naval Academy application process, here’s a deep dive into some stats, stories, and top tips to help you navigate the waters of USNA admission.

    1. Class of 2028: By the Numbers

Let’s kick things off with a look at the Class of 2028’s stats. This year, 814 men and 373 women make up the incoming class. With a total of 15,146 applicants, it’s safe to say that getting into the USNA is no walk in the park. The Naval Academy acceptance rate hovers around 8%, making it one of the most competitive schools in the country. If you’re thinking about applying, be prepared to bring your ‘A’ game!

The class is also making strides in diversity, with 373 women (31.4%) and 511 minority midshipmen (43%) in the mix. This push towards inclusivity shows that the USNA is committed to building a Navy that reflects the diverse makeup of the nation it serves.

    2. From Sea to Shining Sea — and Beyond!

The Class of 2028 isn’t just diverse in gender and ethnicity; they come from every corner of the United States and beyond. Midshipmen were admitted from all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. But the USNA doesn’t stop at national borders — this year’s class includes 17 international students from places as far-flung as Bangladesh, Mongolia, and Nigeria. These international students bring unique perspectives and experiences that will enrich the Naval Academy’s already vibrant culture.

    3. A Legacy of Service

For many midshipmen, the Navy runs in the family. The Class of 2028 includes 38 sons and 27 daughters of Naval Academy alumni, with seven members whose parents are both graduates. This strong tradition of service is a testament to the enduring bonds formed at the Academy, and it’s inspiring to see the next generation carry the torch forward.

    4. Educational Background: A Well-Prepared Crew

When it comes to educational background, the Class of 2028 has trained well for the rigors of the Academy. A total of 209 midshipmen came from the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island. These students have already had a taste of the discipline and dedication required to succeed at the USNA. Additionally, 42 students hail from the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation Program and various civilian prep programs, while 58 were prior enlisted— 49 from the U.S. Navy and 9 from the U.S. Marine Corps. These prior enlisted personnel bring valuable experience to the Yard, making them natural leaders in the class.
