Formal Annapolis Parades: A Tradition Like No Other
In addition to these riveting arts and sporting events, one of the most breathtaking spectacles on the Yard is the formal dress parade. Midshipmen march in perfect formation from Bancroft Hall to Worden Field, where they perform the manual of arms, render honors to the senior officer or civilian dignitary present, and pass in review before the official party and guests. These parades are more than just a display of military precision; they are a time-honored tradition that allows visitors to witness the discipline and dedication of these young men and women. Check out the spring parade schedule to catch these must-see parades in person. The pageantry (including the Naval Academy Silent Drill team), the stirring sounds of the Naval Academy Band, and the proud bearing of the Brigade make for a truly unforgettable experience.
The Most Famous Croquet Match in America: The Annapolis Cup
Perhaps the most anticipated event of the spring season is the annual Annapolis Cup Croquet Match between the U.S. Naval Academy’s Midshipmen and the St. John’s College Johnnies. This beloved tradition, known as the "Johnnies vs. Mids" Croquet Match, will transform the serene lawn of St. John’s College into a lively, pastel-colored spectacle.
The midshipmen take on the Johnnies, who are dressed in whatever theme they’ve chosen for the year, in what has become one of Annapolis’s most unique sporting traditions. Thousands of spectators, many clad in their own vintage-inspired outfits, gather to watch the match and enjoy a day of friendly rivalry. If you’re in town, this is a can’t-miss event! Come on April 5th for the festivities!
