Hippity hop to the cobbler shop! Tucked away in the basement of Bancroft Hall’s 5th Wing is one of the busiest - and most essential - shops on the Yard. While many visitors admire the sharp uniforms and polished appearance of the Brigade, few realize the amount of cobbler work happening behind the scenes to keep midshipmen looking squared away from head to toe.
The U.S. Naval Academy is the only service academy with an on-site shoe repair cobbler, and this NABSD-operated shop handles thousands of shoes and leather goods each year. From dress shoes, to combat boots, to athletic sneakers, the USNA Cobbler Shop quietly keeps the Brigade moving in perfect step.

Footwear Everywhere
To learn more, we spoke with Carlos Eldridge, the Naval Academy’s master cobbler. Eldridge has worked in the shop for about eleven years and has repaired tens of thousands of midshipmen uniform shoes (and boots and backpacks) during his time on the Yard. Each year, midshipmen are issued multiple pairs of shoes as part of their standard uniforms - black oxfords, white shoes for summer, athletic sneakers, and combat boots. With constant drilling, marching, running, and training, it’s no surprise these shoes need regular attention.
In a typical year, more than 3,000 pairs of shoes pass through the shop. One of the most common issues? The infamous sneaker blowout. With midshipmen constantly on the move, athletic shoes often wear down so completely that the sole separates from the shoe. Through expert shoe restoration, Eldridge brings these well-worn sneakers back to life, extending their usefulness and saving resources.
Beyond sneakers, the shop frequently handles shoe heel repair, heel linings, heel plates, and worn-out welts. Combat boots take a beating during training, and Eldridge repairs leather rips, replaces heels, and restores structure so the boots can withstand more miles of service. He also repairs backpacks, purses, and other leather goods by fixing straps, holes, and tears with precision and care.
Midshipmen can bring in non-issue shoes for repair at their own expense, and the shop supports naval officers, enlisted personnel, and USNA faculty and staff as well. As for the mascot’s hooves? Those require a farrier, not a cobbler.
Helping Beyond the Cobbler Shop
The Cobbler Shop operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the pace is steady year-round. During Plebe Issue on I-Day, Eldridge plays a key role issuing shoes and boots to the thousands of midshipmen in the incoming class. He also partners closely with the USNA Uniform Store throughout the year, fitting midshipmen and even assisting with uniform repairs that require heavy-duty stitching.
One thing the shop doesn’t do? Clean shoes. That responsibility falls squarely on the midshipmen (and it’s a skill they quickly learn to master)!

Eldridge’s skills extend far beyond traditional shoe and apparel repair. Over the years, he’s taken on unique projects such as outfitting a USNA horse trailer with leather screens and re-leathering a boat’s steering wheel. His philosophy is simple: Help however possible. “We’re going to try to do the best we can for whatever anyone needs help with,” he says.
To accomplish all of this, the shop is equipped with specialized cobbler supplies and machinery, including a McKay stitcher for outer soles, inner stitchers, male and female nailers, heel pullers, sole splitters, a sole horn, and a powerful press machine. Each tool plays a critical role in keeping Naval Academy footwear functional and regulation-ready.
A Craft Passed Down
Cobbler work runs in Eldridge’s blood. His father, Coleman Eldridge, owned a cobbler shop in Severna Park for more than 40 years. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the business,” Eldridge says. When asked what he likes about working at the cobbler shop, he explains, “I like it all. I grew up on this stuff.”
That pride and craftsmanship are felt throughout the shop and seen in every well-repaired shoe that walks back out the door.
For decades, the Cobbler Shop has been an integral part of life on the Yard. Eldridge’s former supervisor began working here in 1967, a testament to the shop’s long-standing role in supporting the Brigade. At one point, the shop’s staff represented more than 100 years of combined experience.
Supporting the Brigade, Step by Step
The Cobbler Shop is just one example of how the Naval Academy Business Services Division supports midshipmen every day. NABSD also provides uniforms, books, and essential services that make life on the Yard run smoothly.
Here’s how you can support these efforts: When you shop at Navyonline, visit the Yard, or enjoy USNA dining experiences, you’re helping to fund services that directly benefit the Brigade. So the next time you see a midshipman marching by in perfectly restored shoes, remember the skilled hands at work within Bancroft Hall and the long legacy of craftsmanship and care that continues on today.
